Avengers: Doomsday
Everything confirmed about the biggest Marvel film since Endgame — as of August 15, 2026.
A new trailer — and Marvel shows its hand
A new Doomsday trailer ran at the Disney showcase: Doom raises a Sentinel army, Sue Storm warns the heroes about him, Reed Richards confronts him — and Thor attacks with Stormbreaker. On stage: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell; Hugh Jackman appeared in a video message, Ryan Reynolds from off-screen. Even so, there was no confirmation for Deadpool and Wolverine. Also on display: a second Doom costume plus the suits of Nightcrawler and Mystique.
After the saga: the X-Men reboot gets a date
On May 5, 2028 the X-Men reboot opens Phase 7 — with Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*) directs. Which means: the world after Secret Wars already has a schedule.
Hall H completely loses it
An exclusive in-room trailer: Doom stops Thor's Stormbreaker with his bare hand and awakens a Sentinel army. Also confirmed: Ryan Gosling plays Ghost Rider, David Jonsson is the new Black Panther.
The first official trailer is here
After more than a year of radio silence, Marvel shows moving pictures — including the first full look at RDJ's Doom in mask and cloak.
Delay to December
Doomsday moves from May to December 18, 2026, Secret Wars to December 17, 2027 — more time for the two biggest Disney productions of all time.
The legendary chairs livestream
For over 5 hours, Marvel reveals cast names on director's chairs — and drops the bomb: the original X-Men stars (Stewart, McKellen, Grammer, Marsden, Romijn, Cumming) are in.
“New mask, same task” — RDJ is Doom
Robert Downey Jr. takes off the Doom mask in Hall H. The Kang plan is dead, Doctor Doom takes over the saga. Cinema history, live.
The Lore
From 1962 comic roots to the current state of the multiverse — everything you need to truly understand Doomsday.
Who is Doctor Doom?
Victor von Doom debuted in 1962 in Fantastic Four #5 and is considered the greatest villain Marvel ever created. He is monarch of the small Eastern European state of Latveria, a genius on eye level with Reed Richards — and at the same time one of the most powerful sorcerers of the Marvel universe. Science, magic and an absolute claim to power in one person: that is what makes him unique.
His core motive: Doom is convinced the world would be better under his rule — and the frightening part is that in the comics he is occasionally proven right. He is not a destroyer like Thanos but a would-be savior with a boundless ego, who wanted to free his mother from hell and blames Reed Richards for his scarred face.
The Kang crisis and the great pivot
This film was originally called “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”. Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) had been built up as the saga villain since Loki season 1 — including the Council of Kangs in Quantumania. After Majors' conviction, Marvel parted ways with him in December 2023, and the saga needed a new center.
At Comic-Con in July 2024 came the historic moment: the Russos return, the film is called Doomsday — and under the mask is Robert Downey Jr. Marvel replaced the failed plan not with a stopgap but with the biggest character still left, played by the face of the MCU itself.
Sacred Timeline, TVA and variants
Loki season 1 established the rules: there was a Multiversal War between countless timelines. A Kang variant (“He Who Remains”) ended it by pruning everything down to a single Sacred Timeline, guarded by the TVA. Sylvie's regicide reopened the jungle of branches — the multiverse has been sprawling uncontrolled ever since.
In season 2, Loki sacrifices himself and becomes the God of Stories: at the end of time he holds all timelines together with his own hands, like a living tree. Remember that — it is the most important open Chekhov's gun of the saga.
Incursions — when universes collide
Multiverse of Madness delivered the term that drives Doomsday: an incursion is the collision of two universes in which one or both are completely destroyed — triggered when the borders between worlds are violated too often.
We have already seen one: Strange visits a collapsing universe in ruins, and at the end Clea picks him up to repair an incursion “that you caused”. In the comics, incursions are the direct trigger of Secret Wars — the downfall of all worlds, from whose wreckage Doom forges his Battleworld.
Secret Wars: the blueprint
Two comic templates carry the name: the original Secret Wars (1984) — and Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars (2015), the actual model. There the multiverse dies through incursions, and at the last moment Doom seizes the power of the Beyonders.
He creates Battleworld: a patchwork planet made from the remains of destroyed universes, which he rules as God Emperor Doom — with a rewritten reality in which nobody remembers the old world. Only a handful of survivors stand against him, first among them Reed Richards. If Doomsday follows this structure even roughly, we know where the journey is headed.
Franklin Richards — the most powerful child of the multiverse
The post-credit scene of First Steps is the direct entry into Doomsday: four years later, Sue finds little Franklin with a figure in a green cloak and metal mask — Doom kneels before the boy. In the comics, Franklin is an omega-level reality shaper who can create entire universes — and in Hickman's Secret Wars his power keeps Doom's Battleworld alive.
If the MCU follows that, Franklin is not simply a child in danger. He is the battery Doom wants to play god with.
Anchor beings, Earth-838 and the Fox legacy
Deadpool & Wolverine explained two decisive concepts: every universe has an anchor being whose death makes the whole timeline die — and the old Fox universe exists as its own branch in the MCU multiverse, including the Void as a dump for discarded characters.
Add Earth-838 with its Illuminati and Beast's post-credit appearance in The Marvels. The walls between the Fox past and the MCU present have long been riddled with holes — Doomsday only has to tear them down. That is exactly what half the cast is there for.
What else is on the board
Sentry & Void: the MCU has a world-destroyer-level being on the New Avengers' team — unstable, traumatized, and exactly the kind of weapon that gets fought over in a multiverse war.
Mephisto: Sacha Baron Cohen has been established as Marvel's devil since Ironheart — a deal-maker who becomes a heavyweight of his own in the long run.
The Council of Kangs: never resolved. Thousands of Kang variants are theoretically still waiting — and in the comics it is Doom who cleans up what Kang never finishes.
Wiccan: Billy Maximoff lives (Agatha All Along) — Wanda's son is a reality mage, and half the Young Avengers founding roster is complete with him.
Latveria — the country soon to be on every map
In the comics, Latveria is a small Eastern European state between Romania, Serbia and Hungary: picturesque villages, Doombots as police, zero crime, zero freedom. The trick that separates Doom from every other villain: he is a head of state with diplomatic immunity. You cannot simply arrest him — under international law, any attack on Doom is an attack on his country.
For Doomsday that means: the Avengers get an opponent against whom fist justice triggers diplomatic crises. And his people? Mostly genuinely love him — Latveria has no poverty, no wars, no elections. The most uncomfortable question the comics have asked for 60 years: what if the tyrant delivers?
The road map to the finale
This is the track ahead of us: Doomsday (December 2026) opens the two-parter — by everything structure and comics suggest, with an ending that hurts. In between lies a year Marvel will presumably fill with targeted series, before Secret Wars (December 2027) ends the saga and reshuffles the deck: a unified timeline, mutants included, an X-Men reboot behind it.
The mnemonic for everything released until then: if it is about variants, incursions, anchor beings or Franklin, it is required material. The rest is optional. This dossier keeps sorting that — and is updated after every trailer.

The Theory Table
The hottest fan theories with an editorial plausibility rating — based on comics, cast list and leaks.
After Secret Wars: a new, unified timeline with mutants
The saga's meta purpose: Secret Wars as an elegant reset that merges the Fox legacy, Sony contracts and 17 years of continuity into a fresh timeline — with mutants who were "always there". After that: an X-Men reboot. Practically every insider source points this way.
Doomsday ends with the birth of Battleworld
The obvious two-parter structure after Hickman: the heroes lose, the incursions win — and the cliffhanger is Doom's stitched-together world, on which Secret Wars then takes place. Infinity War proved the Russos have the courage for a villain victory.
Franklin Richards is Doom's power source
In the comics, Franklin's universe-creating power feeds Battleworld. The MCU has paved the way: Doom stands next to the boy in the F4 post-credit scene. The film's emotional engine could simply be: Reed and Sue want their child back — from a god.
Loki's timeline tree is the real target
Loki physically holds all timelines together. Whoever wants to control the multiverse or let it collapse must go through him. Either Doom breaks the tree — or Loki has to make the hardest decision of the saga: let branches die to save the trunk. Otherwise Hiddleston's casting makes little sense.
Hugh Jackman shows up (again)
Not officially in the cast — but his Wolverine survived Deadpool & Wolverine, his universe hangs on him as its anchor being, and Secret Wars without the best X-Man would be a strange farewell party. At D23 2026 Jackman appeared in a video message with Ryan Reynolds heckling from off-screen — and still nothing was confirmed. Marvel is audibly playing with the expectation.
The Council of Kangs gets wiped out by Doom
Elegant for Marvel: the open Kang thread is used for characterization — Doom eliminates the Council in one sequence and proves what league he plays in. The SDCC footage (Doom stops Stormbreaker with one hand) hints at exactly this power demonstration.
Chris Evans is NOT playing Steve Rogers
Evans is confirmed, his role is not. He waved off Steve comebacks for years — but gleefully played Johnny Storm in 2024. A Human Torch variant or a dark Steve from another universe would be the more interesting road; old-man Steve as an emotional coda remains conceivable.
The dead return as variants
The multiverse makes every farewell negotiable: an Iron Man variant, a Black Widow, a T'Challa from another world. Marvel will have to use this sparingly or it devalues Endgame — but one or two targeted appearances are considered certain. The new Black Panther could be exactly such a variant.
Doom is a Tony Stark variant
Why else RDJ? The theory: in another universe, Tony didn't become Iron Man but Doom — a Tony who could never stop "saving the world". Against it: the Russos stress that Doom is a completely separate character. For it: Marvel doesn't cast RDJ without a reason.
Mephisto is the puppet master behind Doom
Since Ironheart, Mephisto is real. The theory: Doom's magic has a price, and the devil collects in the end. Currently more wishful thinking than evidence — in the comics, Doom never needed to play second fiddle to anyone.
